Chinese citizens in Singapore have been urged to respect local laws following a deadly car crash involving a man from China.

Ma Chi, a 31-year-old from Sichuan province, was in a red Ferrari sports car that collided with a taxi on May 12.

Ma, the Singaporean taxi driver and a Japanese passenger in the taxi were killed. Two other people were injured.

"The Chinese embassy hopes Chinese citizens in Singapore cherish their lives, stress the safety of themselves and others, abide by local laws and regulations and pay attention to their public image," said a release by the embassy.

Footage of the crash, taken by a camera on the dashboard of another taxi, showed Ma, speeding through a red light several seconds after the signal had changed, AFP reported.

Ma was a financial adviser who came to Singapore in 2008 and was reportedly applying for permanent residency.

The accident triggered concerns from local residents who attacked the Singapore government's immigration policies, claiming they are making Singapore "crowded and dangerous".

There are more than 1 million foreign workers and technicians in Singapore, and Chinese citizens account for a major portion, according to AFP.
