A middle school teacher in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province has regained her ability to breathe nine days after being hit by the bus she shoved students out of the way of, doctors said Thursday.

Doctors turned off the woman's respirator Thursday, but said she was still in critical condition because of serious complications.

These complications included an infection, bruising and toxin absorption caused by muscle necrosis, said Dr. Zhao Mingyan, director of the intensive care unit with the First Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University, a top-level hospital in the province.

"More surgery may be necessary," said Dr. Zhao.

Zhang Lili, a 29-year-old teacher at the No. 19 middle school in the city of Jiamusi, was crossing the road just outside the school's gate when a school bus suddenly veered toward nearby students last Tuesday. Zhang pushed two students away from the oncoming bus, but was herself was run over. Her legs were crushed and have since been amputated.

An expert team sent by the Ministry of Health joined the doctors early Thursday to work on Zhang's treatment, according to Dr. Zhao.
