Police in southwest China's Yunnan province took 10 suspected drug smugglers into custody and confiscated nearly 36 kg of drugs in three separate cases last month, local authorities said Wednesday.
In the most recent case, officers from the Public Security Bureau of Yunxian County intercepted a suspicious motorcycle on April 23 and found 10.69 kg of heroin in a cardboard box hidden on the motorcycle.
Two suspects surnamed He and Yang said they were hired by a Burmese woman to take the drugs to Nanjian county.
Officers busted another two cases on April 11 in which eight suspected smugglers were detained, with 10 kg of heroin and 15.27 kg of crystal meth confiscated by police officers.
The officers also confiscated a handgun, 19 bullets and five vehicles used for drug smuggling.
According to Chinese law, people who smuggle, sell, transport or manufacture an amount of heroin greater than 50 grams can be sentenced to 15 years in jail, life imprisonment or even death.
Yunnan borders Myanmar, Laos and Thailand and sits close to the "Golden Triangle" region, which is notorious for rampant drug production and trafficking.
