A new graduate program that plans to teach students how to write for "popular science" aims to equip a generation of writers with the skills needed to turn complicated scientific matters into easily digestible written forms for the general public - while filling an ever-growing need for such professionals.
The joint program between East China Normal University and Shanghai Association for Science and Technology plans to be introduced by the end of the year, with recruitment expected to begin in the coming months.
Designed to focus course on methods of simplifying scientific research for the purpose of relaying scientific information to non-academics, the program also intends to give students valuable access to first-hand accounts of industry knowledge from field experts via guest lectures.
As the field of popular science expands in China, more and more qualified professionals are needed to develop the area, particularly through the provision of various reading materials for the general public, according to Shanghai Association for Science and Technology.
While the association's members alone have published 11,330 articles and 539 books on relevant scientific topics since 2008, it said that a majority of the publications have been incomprehensible - and a result, inaccessible - to those without a scientific background.
