China's top legislator Wu Bangguo on Thursday stressed protection of the country's cultural relics ahead of the top legislature's nationwide inspection of the enforcement of Law on the Protection of Cultural Relics.

Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), said in a written statement that to fully implement the Law on the Protection of Cultural Relics is the necessary requirement for promoting the cultural tradition of the Chinese nation.

Wu's statement was written for an NPC meeting held Thursday on the nationwide inspection of the Law. From April to May, five inspection teams of NPC officials will go to 10 provincial regions to check the enforcement situation of the Law on the Protection of Cultural Relics.

The enforcement of the law is also a requirement for promoting the prosperity and development of a socialist culture, said Wu in the statement.

The inspection, the first of its kind, aims to supervise and support governments at all levels and related departments to improve work and strengthen management, and conduct studies on how to improve the law, according to a statement from the NPC Standing Committee.
