BMW reward for info on attackers

2012-01-19 10:14 Global Times     Web Editor: Yuan Hang comment

A man has offered his BMW as a reward for any information that leads to the capture of three thugs, allegedly sent by a property management company to attack him three months ago.

During that time, police have made no headway in the investigation, said Zhang Guangtao, 54, a resident of Zhongjia Mansion in Xicheng district.

"It has been three months since I was beaten up. I had three broken ribs, and the police have not launched a proper investigation," alleged Zhang.

"So I had to do something on my own," he said.

Zhang alleges the attack was because of his proposal to set up a property owners committee and urge Beijing Diyu Property Management Company to disclose their revenue, including public maintenance accounts.

"The manager, surnamed Sun, has threatened me ever since I first made the proposal back in 2010. Security guards were standing right next to me when I was attacked, but they did nothing but curse at me," claimed Zhang.

According to Zhang, 90 percent out of the 206 households in the building supported his proposal before the attack, but now he feels betrayed as most residents will no longer openly support him.

"We feel sorry for what happened to Zhang, since he was just doing something for all of us, but we're not police, so we don't know how to help Zhang to fight with these 'underworld' people," said Ji Hongmin, one of Zhang's neighbors, in reference to the property management company.

Zhang said that offering his BMW, worth about 100,000 yuan ($15,850), is a desperate last-ditch attempt to find the perpetrators.

"Officers from Baizhifang police station told me that they erased the video evidence from the camera they had installed facing the scene, as they only keep it for one month," said Zhang.

"But when the attack happened last October, they insisted on waiting for the injury identification report while doing nothing," said Zhang.

Baizhifang police station, Xicheng district, refused to comment yesterday.

An anonymous employee from Beijing Diyu said "the attack had nothing to do with them" before hanging up.

It has been a rough time for some property owners who have stood against property management companies.

According to the Beijing News, a man surnamed Wang from a property owners committee of a community in Tongzhou district was attacked on Monday night, sustaining a broken leg, after the committee decided to replace the current property management company.

Last November, Cairang Duoji, an activist who has raised funds for victims of the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, was attacked by five men after having a dispute with the developer in his community of Xiangliu Yuan, Daxing district.
