Residents experience "happiness index testing" bus shelters in Beijing, July 20, 2011.

(Ecns.cn)--"Happiness index testing" devices were launched Wednesday at bus stops in five cities, including Xi'an of Shaanxi Province, where local residents can share their moods while waiting for the bus.

The machine allows people to say whether or not they are happy by selecting "smilies" on the screen, which include a happy face and a sad face.

On the day of the launch, Xi'an's happiness index was at the top among the five pilot cities, which also include Beijing, Kunming, Shenzhen and Zhengzhou.

"Xi'an is an awesome tourist destination, a cultural city where people are leading a slow and comfortable life," said Mr. Wang, a tourist, as he selected a smiley on the machine.

Web users can also get involved by "tweeting" their feelings about city life, some of which will be randomly selected and displayed on bus stop screens.

The "happiness" activity will continue until August 2. Statistics generated by the machines will then be used to analyze the differences in happiness among residents of the various regions.
